How to use the Universal Converter
The Universal Converter does the maths for you. Choose the type of conversion, pick the unit you have and the unit you want, type the amount, and the answer appears straight away. There is no button to press and no account to create, and the converter works in any modern browser.
- Choose a type of conversion, such as Length or Temperature.
- Type the amount you want to convert in the Amount box.
- Pick the unit you have under From, and the unit you want under To.
- Read the answer. The formula below it shows how the number was worked out.
Use the swap button between the two unit boxes to flip the direction, so you can check a result both ways. The Common values table shows the amount in the target unit for a few typical numbers, which is handy when you need a quick reference.
Every type of conversion we cover
The converter groups units by type so the list stays short. Each type uses internationally agreed definitions.
Length and distance
Metric units such as millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres, and imperial units such as inches, feet, yards and miles. Nautical miles are included for sea and air navigation.
Weight and mass
Milligrams, grams, kilograms and tonnes, along with pounds, ounces and stones. Pakistani and South Asian units such as the tola, seer and maund are included too.
Volume and liquids
Millilitres to cubic metres, plus US and UK gallons, quarts, pints, cups and fluid ounces. US and UK measures differ, so check which one a recipe or label uses.
Cooking measures
Convert cups, tablespoons and teaspoons to millilitres, or cups of common ingredients to grams. Flour, sugar, butter, oats, rice and honey each weigh a different amount per US cup (for example about 125 g for flour and 200 g for sugar), so pick the ingredient for an accurate gram value.
Area and land
Square metres, square feet, acres and hectares, plus the marla and kanal used for land in Pakistan and parts of India.
Temperature
Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin. Temperature is not a simple multiplication, so the converter applies the correct formula for each scale.
Speed
Metres per second, kilometres per hour, miles per hour, feet per second and knots.
Time
Milliseconds through to years. Months and years use average lengths, so they are approximate for calendar dates.
Digital storage
Bits and bytes in both decimal units (KB, MB, GB, TB) and binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB), which is how phones and computers often report sizes.
Pressure, energy and power
Pascals, bar, atmospheres, PSI and mmHg for pressure. Joules, calories, kilowatt-hours and BTU for energy. Watts, horsepower and BTU per hour for power.
Fuel economy
Kilometres per litre, miles per gallon (US and UK) and litres per 100 kilometres. Note that litres per 100 km works in reverse, so a lower number means better economy.
Currency
Enter the exchange rate yourself, for example 1 USD = 278 PKR. The converter multiplies your amount by that rate. We do not supply live rates, so check your bank or a trusted source for today’s figure.
Tips for accurate answers
- Check whether a recipe means US or metric cups, since they are different sizes.
- For cooking, choose the ingredient so the gram value is right. A cup of flour and a cup of honey weigh very different amounts.
- Use the swap button to confirm a result in the opposite direction.
- For money, use a current exchange rate, because rates change every day.
- For medicine, engineering or legal work, confirm the final figure against an official source.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Universal Converter free?
Yes. It is free to use, with no sign-up and no limit on the number of conversions.
Are the results exact?
The converter uses standard conversion factors, so results for length, weight, volume, temperature and the other physical units are exact to the precision shown. Cooking weights and currency rates are estimates, as explained in their sections.
Why do US and UK gallons give different answers?
A US gallon is 3.785 litres and a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 litres. Always check which one you need for fuel, paint or drinks.
Why is a cup of flour different from a cup of sugar?
A cup measures volume, but ingredients differ in how dense they are. Sugar is heavier than flour per cup, so the gram value changes. Pick the ingredient in the cooking section for the most accurate gram figure.
Does the converter store my numbers?
No. All the calculations happen in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to us or stored on a server.
What is a tola, seer or maund?
They are traditional units of weight used in Pakistan and parts of South Asia. A tola is about 11.66 grams, a seer is about 933 grams, and a maund is 40 seers, or about 37.32 kilograms.
